
This report illustrates the airport system in Missouri and highlights areas within the state that are near larger aircraft facilities. Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), the population and area of the state near large aircraft facilities is also calculated.
Airports have long been a vital part of many communities and in our fast-paced society, they are becoming even more important. Airports offer quick access to locations throughout the country and provide a means of cost-effective cargo and package transport. Communities near airports suitable for large business aircraft or passenger jet service can also promote tourism and attract corporate headquarters and back offices, large-scale manufacturers, and other businesses that require such services. Progressive transportation systems now rely on multi-modal, connected alternatives to meet the needs of a mobile society and airports are a key element.
Each year over 160,000 tons of cargo and 20 million airline passengers are transported in Missouri by air. The airport system of Missouri consists of approximately 130 public-use airports. Two airports, Lambert International in St. Louis and Kansas City International, support major commercial-passenger traffic. Six other airports in Cape Girardeau, Columbia, Joplin, Ft. Leonard Wood, Kirksville, and springfield provide regional commercial-passenger services. The remaining airports support a variety of needs from large business to general business to basic aviation facilities.
