DED releases May 2011 state jobs report

JEFFERSON CITY– Missouri’s unemployment rate remained unchanged in May, according to data released today by the Missouri Department of Economic Development (DED). The state’s unemployment rate in May was 8.9 percent, the same as the April figure, on a seasonally-adjusted basis..
In comparison, the seasonally-adjusted U.S. unemployment rate for May was 9.1 percent.
There were no significant changes in specific industries for the month. Overall, employment declined by 1,500 jobs in May. The state has now created nearly 18,000 new jobs thus far in 2011.
Economic conditions were based on a reference week that fell during the second week of May, which was during the severe flooding in southeast Missouri but before the Joplin tornado.
